Wow, have you tried Airbnb?

I know some people who were unable to get rooms at big-name hotels because they were all booked up. Where do you turn in such situations? Go check out Airbnb and see for yourself what this site is all about.

My mom has friends who rent out rooms in their homes through Airbnb. There’s one in Portland, Maine. She rents out a room in her home on the east side of Portland not far from all the Old Port activities and with water views.

The amazing thing is the price! The cost to rent through Airbnb is so much less than a big-name hotel. Just because the cost is lower doesn’t mean the comfort level is any lower!

Currently, if you choose to sign up with Airbnb through my link, the site says: “Send people you know an invite with $40 off a home booking of $75 or more and $15 off an experience of $50 or more. Get $20 for every person who completes a stay and $10 for every person who goes on an experience. Use the credit you earn to book your next trip on Airbnb.”

Who can host on Airbnb?

“Almost anyone can be a host. It’s free to sign up and list your space. The listings available on the site are as diverse as the hosts who list them, so you can post airbeds in apartments, entire houses, rooms in bed and breakfasts or inns, tree houses in the woods, boats on the water, or enchanted castles.

“You can list your space in almost any location worldwide. While we would like to keep the Airbnb marketplace open to the entire world, we are required to comply with international regulations that restrict the use of our site by residents of certain countries.”

You can be an Airbnb experience host

“Airbnb Experiences are activities designed and led by inspiring locals. They go beyond typical tours or classes by immersing guests in each host’s unique world. It’s an opportunity for anyone to share their hobbies, skills, or expertise without needing an extra room.”

Examples of Airbnb lodging in Portland, Maine

  • An entire “breathtaking modern penthouse apartment with water views” 1 bedroom for $85/night.
  • An entire “sunny 19-century apartment” with 3 bedrooms for $78/night.
  • My mom’s friend’s listing: Private suite in house, water views, 1 bedroom, 1 private bath. CLICK HERE to view photos of this listing.

You can use the Airbnb site to find lodging or to offer your home/apartment/room for short-term rentals.

The beauty of using Airbnb is that they keep a calendar of dates your rental is available and they screen the people applying for the rental.

SECURITY AND TRUST

This is what Airbnb says about security and trust on their site:

“Every Airbnb reservation is scored for risk before it’s confirmed. We use predictive analytics and machine learning to instantly evaluate hundreds of signals that help us flag and investigate suspicious activity before it happens. While no screening system is perfect, globally we run hosts and guests against regulatory, terrorist, and sanctions watchlists. For hosts and guests in the United States, we also conduct background checks. We run safety workshops with hosts and leading local experts and encourage hosts to provide guests with important local information. We also give any host who wants one a free smoke and carbon monoxide detector for their home.”

“Our secure platform ensures your money gets to the host—that’s why we ask you to always pay through Airbnb and never wire money or pay someone directly.

“Account protection
We take a number of measures to safeguard your Airbnb account, like requiring multi-factor authentication when a login is attempted from a new phone or computer and sending you account alerts when changes are made.
“Scam prevention
Always pay and communicate directly through the Airbnb website or app. As long as you stay on Airbnb throughout the entire process—from communication, to booking, to payment—you’re protected by our multi-layer defense strategy.”
