At least two in the family play UNO almost every night either before or after dinner. It’s fun and relaxing. With large groups playing UNO, the play can get cut-throat and boisterous, but still fun! We actually use two decks of cards and a battery-operated card shuffler.
Read the official UNO rules here: https://www.unorules.com
From the site:
“You have to match either by the number, color, or the symbol/Action. For instance, if the Discard Pile has a red card that is an 8 you have to place either a red card or a card with an 8 on it. You can also play a Wild card (which can alter current color in play).
If the player has no matches or they choose not to play any of their cards even though they might have a match, they must draw a card from the Draw pile. If that card can be played, play it. Otherwise, keep the card, and the game moves on to the next person in turn. You can also play a Wild card, or a Wild Draw Four card on your turn.”
I like the UNO explanation and instructions on the Wiki site (link below) because the first link (link above) has tons of advertisements that have to be scrolled over. Very annoying! Try this wiki link:

My family has never done the 500 points rule to declare a winner. When we play UNO, the first person to say UNO before playing their last card (which they MUST declare after playing their second to last card) is the winner. We don’t count points! That’s mostly because we usually have only 2 players.
Affiliate links to Walmart items (economical, plus you can order online and pick up in the store).
UNO card packs. A wide variety of UNO themes available at this link including an adult theme, Barbie, Spanish language, and MarioKart. Also, a pack of cards that comes with a card launcher!
UNO specific card pack: buy two packs!
Battery-operated card shuffler. We love this card shuffler! It’s noisy, but when playing a game of UNO, no need to be quiet!
Pioneer Woman bowls. Use the small bowls for individual servings of unwrapped snacks. The larger bowl can be filled with wrapped snacks. Later, you can use the set to serve cold pasta or tossed salad. Versatile!
Chex Mix variety pack. Serve whichever variety your guests like into one of the Pioneer Woman bowls.
Bite-size variety candy packs. Because everyone likes different candies and some have dietary restrictions such as no sugar or no nuts. Scroll through so you can find the candy varieties that will suit you and your guests, ranging from tarts to chocolates.
Small rectangular plastic food container with lid to store cards with instruction sheet rather than trying to fit cards back into the box they come in. I’m sorry to say that I did not find a suitably priced container on Walmart. I looked on Dollar Tree’s site as well, and nada. I am pretty sure that the size we use to store our UNO cards was part of a larger set, but I wouldn’t pay the prices on Walmart’s site! Shop around for the right size for your cards. See the plastic container we use in this picture taken yesterday on the kitchen counter.
Popcorn bowl set. You can purchase this set and extra individual bowls at Dollar Tree, too.
TikTok video of kid crying while playing UNO. This video has gone viral and it cracks me up. Basically, the kid knows that he’s getting screwed when it’s his turn and the card on deck is the “Pick 4+ cards.” He just doesn’t want to follow the card instructions and be set back in his attempt to get rid of all the cards in his hand! He has a meltdown. The family tries not to laugh. They are using the large-size UNO cards and hiding their faces while laughing behind the cards. It is really funny.
So there you have it! A fun card game for (most of) the family! Let me know if you play UNO already or if you are buying it now and trying it for the first time.
