My dad makes the BEST homemade steak ‘n cheese subs at least once a month. Fresh meat, tons of cheese and soft toasted rolls. We all choose our own condiments and chips and a pickle on the side. It’s better than any takeout food and it’s so much fun to have family over for some laughs!
First, Dad gets fresh shaved steak in the meat department at Hannaford’s. To fill six Barowsky sub rolls, he buys 1.5 pounds of the shaved steak. He also gets a package of shredded cheddar cheese, the orange kind. And he buys the rolls as fresh as he can get them. That’s it! No onions, peppers, mushrooms or anything else.
He cooks the shaved steak on a grill as seen in this photo. When the steak is done, he turns the heat down and blends in the shredded cheddar until it evenly melts and coats the cooked shaved steak.
He cuts the tips off each roll, and puts them on a cookie sheet lined with foil and toasts them in the oven. Once the steak/cheese and sub rolls are ready, everyone takes a roll and puts whatever condiments they want on the rolls.
And, of course, we serve a variety of chips (including Munchos!).
He’s the best dad, and he makes the best steak ‘n cheese subs! Yummy!
