Challenge: Organize cleaning supplies!

How to START cleaning

Even your cleaning supplies need to be decluttered and organized! Are you storing cleaning supplies in different areas of your home? Do you need the cleaning supplies in all those areas? Is each area out of reach of children and pets?

Cleaning supplies should be stored:

  1. Store in a clean, cool, dry space.
  2. In a well-ventilated space.
  3. Make sure the area is locked or inaccessible to children (use child safety locks on cabinets).
  4. Keep cleaning supplies away from heat and combustibles / flammable.
Of course, you should check the labels on your cleaning supplies for storage tips, especially if it’s a new-to-you cleaner.
Having a closet that locks in some way, and has shelves and hooks is ideal. But not every home has such a closet. If you’re thinking of storing some cleaning supplies under the sinks in your house, make sure the cabinet doors are locked if children live in the home or visit.
Clear plastic bins can help organize your cleaning supplies including sponges, gloves, and rags.

First steps

The first step is to gather all your cleaning supplies in one spot. Declutter! Get rid of anything that hasn’t been used in over a year or that has less than an inch remaining in it and is not used often.
Is your cleaning closet or cabinet easily accessible? Do you want to continue to use it or is there a more convenient closet/cabinet to start using instead?
While your chosen location for storing your cleaning supplies is emptied, it’s time to clean it! THEN you can put items back on the shelves.
If using a closet and it’s big enough, use the wall space to hang brooms, mops, and dusters (use adhesive broom grippers, for example). Add a small rolling cart to hold small cleaning supplies such as sprays and towels so you can wheel them around where they are needed on cleaning day. If you don’t have the floor space in the closet or are using a cabinet, a shower caddy comes in handy.

Organize by type of cleaning supply

Divide your cleaning supplies into the ordinary, everyday type of cleaners and the ones you use less often: carpet cleaners, oven cleaners, degreasers, silver polish, paint removers, drain cleaners, and upholstery cleaners. Rather than ending up with several bottles of cleaner that have only an inch of cleaner remaining, keep one of each of the everyday cleaners on a top shelf and completely use a cleaner before reaching for the one from the extra inventory.
Get a label maker and make labels for all the storage bins in your cleaning supply closet or cabinet. Use sturdy clear acrylic bins and store similar products together. If you are using wire shelving, consider using liners on the shelves.
To be honest, it makes sense to store bathroom cleaners in or near the bathroom! Again, child safety locks are a must. And it makes sense to store laundry supplies near the washer and dryer, and dishwashing supplies under the sink. Whenever cleaning supplies are unable to be stored in the location they will be used, such as bathroom cleaning supplies under the bathroom sink, then hopefully you have a closet nearby where you can use the top shelf for those bathroom cleaning supplies.

Brilliant ideas

A lazy Susan or pull-out bins for under sink storage might be a good consideration. Also, a tension rod installed under a sink is a good place to hang cleaners by the spray handle.

I can see that I have a lot to do just to get my cleaning supplies back in order! I think you’ll find that when your cleaning supplies are decluttered and organized, your cleaning tasks become that much easier!

This is another product that has a wide variety of styles. You can get the grippers with six grips all in one strip or packages of grippers and the grippers are individual. I have both kinds in my house. The style that has multiple grippers in one strip don’t always leave enough space for items to be stored that close together.
