It’s Day 10 of the Friendship Cake dough starter journey! After carefully creating a wonderful, happy dough starter, I used a cup (or more) of the dough starter for part two of the journey: actually baking the cake!
The Friendship Cake is delicious! The taste of the cake is worth waiting 10 days for a bite! By the time I got the cake made and cooled enough for a piece, it was already 8 p.m.
You can get a printable copy of the dough starter, cake recipe, and checklist from an earlier post I wrote HERE: https://livingwithdana.com/2024/04/friendship-cake-and-starter-recipe/
I’ve updated that recipe so that you don’t make the same mistakes I did. First, I enlarged the text so that the lines don’t blur together. Second, I fixed some inconsistencies between the checklist and the recipe directions.
I also would not use a lipped or rimmed container for the starter dough the next time. On Day 10 when it was time to dump the dough starter into a large bowl, the dough starter was difficult to scrape past that jar lip until I remembered I was adding a cup of milk so I poured that in and swished it around and voila, I got out all of the dough starter. I now have a glass container specifically made for dough starters!

Or you can purchase a dough starter container kit from my Walmart Storefront using my #walmartcreator link: https://walmrt.us/3VIeAjh
What’s the difference between the two? The Walmart version uses milliliters and the Amazon version is as pictured here with ounces. The Amazon version has a bamboo lid and the Walmart version has a metal lid. Not sure why lids are needed since the starter dough needs to breath and cheesecloth or a dish cloth would suffice as a cover. The Amazon version comes with a rubber sleeve for the bottom of the container; it’s like a non-skid sleeve. They both come with versions of temperature gauge, cloth cover, spatula, and dateline.
I ended up with about four cups of dough at the end and separated the dough starter into one cup for a friend, one cup for me to do another round of 10 days, and two cups for my cake batter. That was kind of a lot of batter. It dripped over the side of the bundt pan when baking. I should have known! The kitchen did get a little smoky from the batter baking on the oven floor!
Get your bundt pan at my Walmart storefront #walmart link: https://walmrt.us/3JeMIvB I have bundt pans of various sizes including mini. Usually bundt cakes aren’t frosted. This recipe doesn’t call for an icing, but I think I’m going to make one with butter, confectioners sugar, and milk. I haven’t looked for my icing recipe yet.
The cake tastes different when it’s warm and when it’s cold, but both are delicious!
Thanks for reading my blog today! I hope you read other blog posts I’ve written about various subjects. Have a great day!
