If you like re-purposing items when they’ve finished their intended goal, then you’ll like this craft project. I used glass yogurt jars, bought two different types of lids made specifically for these jars, and spices to make themed seasonings. For this example, I put together spices to make up my taco seasoning jar.
These are the spices you need:
TACO SEASONING
- 1 Tbsp. chili powder
- 1 Tbsp. garlic powder
- 2 tsp. paprika
- 1 tsp. cumin
- 2 tsp. onion powder
- 1 tsp. oregano
- 1 tsp. sea salt
- 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper
- 1/2 tsp. cayenne powder
Measure and add all spices and herbs to clean, empty jar. Put lid on and shake well. Add label to either glass jar or top of lid, depending on if the spices will be viewed from the top as in a drawer or on a shelf. You can add extra touches such as tie a twine bow around the jar.
Isn’t this adorable! I bought bamboo lids as well as the snap-on plastic lids. For this project I chose the plastic lids to seal in freshness and for portability. When gifting these jars, you want the cover to stay put.
Another idea for filling these jars is to make hot chocolate mixes! Martha Stewart uses little bowls like these for “a pinch of salt” while she’s cooking. So many ideas! What will you do with your jars?
As you can see, the project was kind of messy but I was working on a plastic tablecloth, so no worries. Be sure to protect your working surface.
I have 18 of these jars all washed and ready to become re-purposed! Seasoning jars aren’t the only craft I have planned for these jars so stay tuned! The labels weren’t difficult to peel off. If I got them out of the dish warmer while still warm, they peeled right off. If not, I soaked in hot water and then the labels peeled off easily. The most difficult part was getting the label glue residue off the glass. Steel wool scrubbing pad works best. Took my nail polish off though! LOL. Also, the tin foil glue from the cover of the yogurt jar leaves a hard-to-remove glue residue that really needs to be scrubbed to remove. I did try things like nail polish remover and glass-top oven cleaner, but the scrub pad worked best.
