Week 5: Garage – Organize Tools & Equipment
Sort through tools, equipment, and gardening supplies.
Clean shelves and dispose of broken items.
Organize seasonal items like holiday decorations.
Sweep and mop the garage floor.
One Saturday morning, I woke up with a surge of motivation. The garage, which had long been neglected, was begging for attention. It had slowly turned into a dumping ground for everything under the sun: old tools, seasonal decorations, garden supplies, and even forgotten treasures from past projects. It was a space that had long lost its purpose, and I was determined to change that.
Step 1: Start with the Tools
I decided to tackle the mess systematically. First up: the tools. As soon as I opened the drawers, I was greeted with a mix of rusty wrenches, mismatched screwdrivers, and hammers that had seen better days. The key here was to be ruthless. I asked myself, “Do I really need this?” Anything that was broken, rusty beyond repair, or that hadn’t been used in years went straight into the trash or recycling bin.
Tip: Organize your tools by type and size in labeled bins or drawer organizers. This not only saves time when you need something but also makes your garage feel instantly tidier.
For the tools that made the cut, I created designated spots in drawers and bins. Everything had a home, and the chaos of random tools scattered around the space started to fade away. It was amazing how much more functional the space felt once the tools were organized.
Step 2: The Gardening Supplies
Next, I moved on to the gardening supplies. It wasn’t just soil and pots scattered around—it was a mishmash of bags, broken planters, and misplaced garden gnomes. Some things I hadn’t used in years, and others were still perfectly good but just needed a proper place.
I decided to go through each item and ask myself the same questions: “Do I use this often? Is it still in good condition? Can I donate it?”
Hack: Use clear bins to store things like bags of soil or plant food. Label them clearly, and place them on high shelves. You’ll save space and avoid the frustration of digging through bags every time you need something.
After cleaning the shelves and rearranging the pots, tools, and other supplies, it was incredible how much more organized the space felt. I also made sure to keep gardening tools close to the shelves for easy access.
Step 3: Seasonal Decorations
Then came the seasonal decorations—boxes upon boxes of holiday cheer buried beneath piles of camping gear. I’d lost track of what was in those boxes, and let’s be real, some things were long past their prime.
I spent time sorting through the decorations, grouping them by season, and discarding anything that was broken or that I no longer used. I also took the opportunity to create a better system for storing them: stackable bins, clearly labeled, and placed at the back of the garage.
Pro Tip: Store seasonal items in clear, stackable bins and make sure to label them clearly. When you pull them out next year, everything will be easy to find and in great condition.
By the time I was done, I had a new appreciation for the holiday items I had. They were now neatly packed away and would be a joy to bring out when the time came.
Step 4: The Finishing Touches
After hours of organizing and decluttering, I was almost there. The garage looked significantly better, but it still needed one last step: a thorough cleaning. I grabbed the broom and swept the floors, getting rid of dust, debris, and dirt that had built up over time. Once the floor was clear, I quickly mopped it up for a fresh, clean finish.
The Result: A Space That Works for You
By the time I was done, the garage felt like a completely different space. It wasn’t just organized; it was functional, clean, and ready to be used for whatever projects I had in mind. I could finally see everything I had and didn’t have to dig through piles to find the tools or supplies I needed.
Final Tip: When organizing any space, focus on creating a system that works for YOU. Whether it’s bins, shelves, or hanging tools, make sure everything has a dedicated spot. It will save you time and frustration in the long run.
Cleaning, decluttering, and organizing my garage wasn’t just about tidying up—it was about transforming a space into something that served me better. And now, every time I walk in, I feel a sense of accomplishment. My garage isn’t just a place to park the car anymore—it’s a space that’s ready for creativity, projects, and whatever comes next.
