Welcome to Week 11 of our 52-Week Cleaning & Organizing Challenge! This week, we’re tackling one of the most important (yet often overlooked) parts of your bedroom: your mattress and bedding. Let’s give your sleep sanctuary the deep clean it deserves, ensuring you rest easier at night.
Week 11: Bedroom – Deep Clean Mattress & Bedding
- Flip or rotate the mattress.
- Clean under the bed.
- Wash bedding and change sheets.
- Vacuum or clean the rug or carpet.
1. Flip or Rotate Your Mattress
Why flip or rotate your mattress?
Flipping or rotating your mattress regularly helps to even out wear and tear. Over time, body impressions can form on the surface, especially if you sleep in the same position every night. Flipping or rotating helps to distribute your body weight more evenly and can extend the lifespan of your mattress.
How often should you flip or rotate your mattress?
Generally, you should rotate your mattress every 3-6 months and flip it every 6-12 months (depending on the mattress type). Some mattresses are designed to be one-sided, so make sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid damage.
Pro Tip: If your mattress is particularly heavy, it might help to have someone assist you.

2. Clean Under the Bed
When was the last time you looked under your bed? It’s a hotspot for dust bunnies, pet hair, and forgotten items. Regularly cleaning under the bed not only keeps the area neat but also helps with air circulation, which can improve your overall indoor air quality.
How to clean under the bed:
Step 1: Remove any items that have accumulated under the bed. Use a dustbin or container to organize or discard unnecessary items.
Step 2: Vacuum thoroughly using a crevice tool to reach tight corners. If you have a lot of space under your bed, using a robot vacuum with a low profile can save you time.
Step 3: Wipe down the bed frame and legs with a damp cloth to remove dust and grime.
Pro Tip: If you’re storing items under your bed, use airtight storage bins or a fabric dust skirt to keep things tidy and free from
dust.

3. Wash Bedding & Change Sheets
Washing your bedding regularly is essential for keeping your bed fresh and free from allergens, sweat, oils, and dust mites. Ideally, sheets should be washed once a week, but if you can’t manage that, aim for at least once every two weeks.
How to properly wash your bedding:
Step 1: Check the care labels on your sheets, comforter, and pillowcases for any special instructions.
Step 2: Wash sheets in warm or hot water (check the fabric care label for guidance) to kill bacteria and dust mites.
Step 3: For comforters or duvet covers, use a gentle cycle and add a laundry booster like oxygen bleach to remove stubborn stains and odors.
Step 4: Dry the bedding thoroughly, either in the dryer on a low setting or air-dry it if the fabric is delicate.
Pro Tip: Consider using pillow and mattress protectors to help keep your bedding cleaner for longer. These can be easily removed and washed along with your sheets.

4. Vacuum or Clean the Rug/Carpet
If you have a rug or carpet in your bedroom, it’s time to give it a deep clean. Rugs and carpets trap dust, pet dander, dirt, and allergens, which can affect both your sleep quality and overall health.
How to clean your carpet or rug:
Step 1: Vacuum thoroughly, paying special attention to corners and edges. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to trap smaller
particles.
Step 2: For high-traffic areas, consider using a carpet cleaner or steam cleaner to remove deep-set stains.
Step 3: If you have a rug, shake it out and then vacuum both sides to eliminate dust. You can also take it outside to give it a good airing out.
Pro Tip: If you don’t have a carpet cleaner, you can rent one from many local stores or hire a professional to deep clean your carpet a few times a year.
