☀️ Protect, Style & Shine All Season Long

Summer is a time for sunshine, road trips, messy buns, and poolside lounging—but all that fun can take a toll on your hair. Whether you’re dealing with color fade, chlorine damage, or just trying to keep cool and stylish, today’s post is packed with expert-approved hair care advice plus a few hacks I swear by.

🌊 What Happens to Dyed Hair in Pool Water?

If you have dyed or lightened hair, especially blonde or highlighted tones, chlorinated pool water can cause discoloration—even a greenish tint! Chlorine strips natural oils and can interact with metals in the water (like copper), which bind to the hair shaft and change its color and texture. I’ve included several brands of shampoos and conditioners and other products that I’ve used and they all have different price points, fragrances, qualities that put them in my favorites.

👩‍🔬 Expert Tip:

Before swimming, wet your hair with clean tap water and apply a leave-in conditioner or lightweight oil to create a barrier. Pool owners don’t like the suntan oils and hair oils that come off swimmers so you might want to wear a swim cap. Wearing a swim cap may not be glamorous, but it’s effective.

🎨 Brassy Hair Fix: The Power of Purple (and Blue) Toners

Brassy, yellow-orange tones are the enemy of dyed hair—especially if you’re maintaining blonde, ash brown, or silver shades. That’s where toning shampoos come in.

What to Use:

  • Purple shampoos neutralize yellow tones in blonde and silver hair.
  • Blue shampoos counteract orange tones in brunette-dyed hair.

💡 Hack: Use a purple shampoo once or twice a week, not daily, or your hair could take on a purple hue. Always follow with a hydrating conditioner.

💁‍♀️ Summer Styles: Messy Buns, Clip-Ons & Cool Girl Hairpieces

When it’s hot, the last thing you want is to style your hair with heat tools. That’s why I love using clip-in messy buns and ponytail extensions—they’re lightweight, heat-free, and instantly elevate a casual look.

I keep a few in different styles to match the situation or event. Bonus: they hold up well in humidity!

Favorites:

  • Clip-In Ponytail Extension – Heat Resistant. The longer the ponytail, the heavier it will be. Amazon affiliate link https://amzn.to/43GxgDy

🧢 Hair Protection on the Go: Baseball Caps & Scarves

Wearing a hat isn’t just about style—it’s sun protection for your scalp and hair. UV rays can dry out your strands and fade color faster than you’d think.

Dana’s go-tos:

  • Breathable baseball caps with a ponytail opening. TOP-EX Cooling UV 50 High Ponytail Baseball Cap for Women – Most Women Start with S/M – Breathable. Amazon affiliate link https://amzn.to/43XBk1i

🧴 Thinning Hair? These Shampoos and Conditioners Show Promise

Hair loss or thinning can feel extra frustrating in summer when humidity weighs everything down. Luckily, a few products are getting great reviews for supporting scalp health and encouraging growth.

Look for ingredients like:

  • Biotin

  • Saw Palmetto

  • Caffeine

  • Pumpkin seed oil

Recommended duos:

  • Caffeine-Infused Growth Support Shampoo and Conditioner Set. Read about how caffeine helps your hair at this Amazon affiliate link https://amzn.to/4kEWYhQ

Consistency is key—these products need at least 4–6 weeks of regular use to show visible changes. Combine with gentle scalp massages to stimulate circulation.

🧼 Bonus Life Hacks for Summer Hair

✔️ Rinse your hair after ocean or pool swims – salt and chlorine linger.
✔️ Dry shampoo is your best friend – skip the daily wash, avoid drying out your scalp.
✔️ Silk pillowcase = less frizz and breakage, especially when sleeping with damp hair.
✔️ Microfiber towel – better for your hair than a standard bath towel.
