My Tattoo Story (and Why I Don’t Regret a Single One)

I never imagined I’d be the kind of person with sleeves. And yet, here we are. I get a lot of questions—especially when I post photos in tank tops or short sleeves. “Do they all mean something?” “Did they hurt?” “Do you regret any of them?”    

So once a year, I like to sit down and share the story behind my tattoos—where they started, how they’ve evolved, and why they still feel right for me.

It All Started with a Quiet Curiosity

For years, I admired tattoos on other people but wasn’t ready to commit. I didn’t grow up with anyone in my life who had them, and I definitely wasn’t sure I could ever commit to something so permanent.

But the more I thought about it, the more I realized I did have stories worth carrying. Not everything has to have a deep meaning, but some of mine absolutely do. Others are simply beautiful artwork that makes me feel grounded and expressive in a way nothing else quite does.

The Story Behind Lola Montez

One of my most complimented tattoos is of Lola Montez—an infamous 19th-century dancer and actress who lived life on her own terms (even when it stirred up scandal). She wasn’t perfect, but she was bold. Reading her story made something in me sit up straighter. I knew she belonged in my personal collection.

She reminds me to be unapologetically myself—on the days that’s easy and the days it’s not.

  Some people admire them. Others… well, not so much. But the important part is: I didn’t get them for anyone else. That’s kind of the whole point.

So, Should You Get a Tattoo?

Maybe. Maybe not. That’s totally up to you. But if you’ve been thinking about it—really thinking about it—start a little inspiration folder, look for artists who specialize in the style you love, and give yourself permission to imagine what it would feel like to wear your story.

And if tattoos aren’t your thing? That’s okay too. We all express ourselves in different ways. I just happen to use ink.
