The Garage (aka That Mysterious Land of Forgotten Projects)

It’s Week 33 of our 52-Week Cleaning, Organizing & Decluttering Challenge, and we’re heading into a space that tends to collect everything from half-empty paint cans to bicycles that haven’t rolled since 2012. Yes, it’s garage time. And while we’re at it, let’s give your car the love it deserves, too. It’s basically your second closet on wheels—except you can’t shut the door on the mess when guests come over.

🧼 Task 1: Clean the Car Inside & Out

Whether you’re team “Car Wash and Detail” or “Hose and Hope,” now’s the time to refresh your ride. Grab the vacuum (I love this compact cordless one for the car!), wipe down the dashboard, and take out those stray water bottles and mystery receipts.

Handheld Vacuum Cordless – Car Vacuum Cleaner with Brushless Motor, 15000Pa Strong Suction, LED Light, Type C Cable, 2 Fliters, Portable Hand Vacuum for Home, Pet and Car. Amazon affiliate link https://amzn.to/3GBUIZP

Helpful Tools:

  • Trunk organizer (because who wants apples rolling around next to gym shoes?). Foldable Trunk organizer for SUVs & Sedans, Sturdy Car Organization for Car Accessories, Tools, Sundries, Black, 2 Compartments, 21.3″×12.6″×10.6″ Amazon affiliate link https://amzn.to/3GAJzbL

🛠️ Task 2: Declutter & Organize the Garage

Start by sorting what stays and what absolutely needs to go. If it’s broken, rusted, expired, or hasn’t been touched in a year, it’s time to say goodbye. Group similar items together—tools with tools, sports gear with sports gear, and holiday decor with… well, probably spiders.

My go-to organizing faves:

2 Pack Mop and Broom Holder, Wall Mounted Organizer Mop and Broom Storage Tool Rack with 5 Ball Slots and 6 Hooks (Black). Amazon creator ad link https://amzn.to/42djzKs
  • Overhead ceiling storage for lightweight items like seasonal decor.

Don’t forget to sweep and mop if your garage has a concrete floor—it’s a small touch that makes a big difference. And if you really want bonus points, add a fresh car air freshener once you’re done. I’m a fan of anything that smells like “Clean Linen” or “New Car” (even if mine is 12 years old and has hosted many a french fry).

🎯 Pro Tips for Success:

  • Set a timer for 30 minutes per section so you don’t burn out.

  • Turn up your favorite playlist or podcast—good vibes only!

  • Don’t organize trash. If it’s trash, let it go!
