A Brief History of the Apron (and Five Pretty Ones Worth Wearing This Holiday Season)

There’s something so comforting about tying on an apron. Maybe it’s the way it marks the start of something good — baking cookies, basting a turkey, or whipping up that holiday fudge recipe that never quite lasts till Christmas Eve.

Aprons have always had a way of saying, “I’m home, I’m creating, I’m caring.” I own five aprons and I have given away many aprons as gifts over the years. They are always appreciated.

But before aprons became cute holiday accessories or kitchen fashion statements, they were pure practicality.

A Little Apron History

Aprons date all the way back to ancient times — worn by blacksmiths, stonemasons, butchers, and homemakers alike. They were essential for protecting clothing before washing machines and fast fashion came along.

By the 1800s, aprons became a symbol of domestic pride. Women wore them daily, often embroidered or trimmed with lace. In the 1950s, aprons reached their iconic era — think floral prints, crisp pleats, and matching oven mitts. They were part of the “hostess uniform,” worn with pearls and a smile (even when the roast was burning).

Today, aprons have circled back around — equal parts functional and fashionable. Whether you’re baking pies, wrapping gifts, or serving mulled cider, a pretty apron just feels right for the season.
