The day after Valentine’s Day, I removed all Valentine’s Day decor and table settings and started planning the next special day: St. Patrick’s Day! It was fun to reminisce as I scrolled through photos of my table settings and decorations from years’ past. Next, I went to my basement storage area (which is like going shopping!) and located the bin of St. Patrick’s Day stuff. Some of the items I used on last year’s St. Patrick’s Day table are stored in the china cabinet. Those items include green cabbage leaf plates and bowls. I bought my mother a lot of that set and it looks great on the table and stores nicely in the antique china cabinet.
I carefully put away the Valentine’s decorations before starting with the St. Pat’s decor. I thought the Valentine’s table looked really cute this year.
I use wire shelves and labeled plastic bins to store each holiday’s and season’s decorations. I am trying something different this year and rather than store breakable items in the bins, I am placing the breakable stuff directly on the shelves where I can see at a glance what I have. I also don’t have to wrap the breakables in cloths or tissue paper before putting inside a bin. I use a market basket to go “shopping” for the breakable items I want to use.
This year’s St. Patrick’s table started with emptying a bin and collecting the breakable items. Many of these items came from the dollar store and I can see that I will need to buy only a few things this year. But have you noticed the shelves are rather empty of St. Patrick’s Day decorations? The stores went from Valentine’s Day to Easter with very little for St. Patty.
The above photo shows most of the St. Patrick’s Day decor I have minus the green cabbage leaf dinnerware.
We used the plaid tablecloth last year. I would have purchased a new tablecloth but there was slim pickings in St. Patrick’s Day decor in the stores this year and I didn’t see any tablecloths. This is a flannel-backed plastic tablecloth. We used the gold chargers with the green cabbage leaf dinnerware and the gold-embossed glasses (my mother has a lot of that glassware).
Close-up of the place setting. Three settings are for the “boys” and three are for the “girls.” I purchased more stuff for the “boys” settings including the hats and bow ties. Those were dollar store purchases. The “girls” settings had St. Patrick’s headbands. The centerpiece on the table is a wooden box made and carved by my great-great-grandfather in the late 1800s! I filled it with bead necklaces, fake gold coins, and other shiny stuff so that it looks like an overflowing treasure chest.
And there you have it! A wider view of the table and the wonderful hanging light fixture above it. I wrapped St. Patrick’s wire garland around the light. You can’t see it in this picture but there is a string of green four-leaf clover lights around the treasure chest. It’s one of those battery-operated lights that have gotten popular in the last five or so years. I just noticed I don’t have the napkins and silverware set! Oh no! Guess I will do that tomorrow and maybe add a picture to this post later!

I know Christmas was a while ago, but maybe you just started reading my blog recently? I wrote a blog post about storing Christmas decorations here: https://livingwithdana.com/2023/12/how-to-store-christmas-decorations/
Dollar Tree isn’t always a first choice for online shopping unless you need to buy in quantity. Some items are available in store only, too. I’ve included images and links in case you want to see some of the items I used to decorate for St. Patrick’s Day. I bought them in-store for $1.25 each. Hurry to the Dollar Tree closest to you because there was not a big selection this year.

(Again, look at the dollar store closest to you for these inexpensive items, unless you need to buy in bulk, like for a nursing home.)

Oh, and there’s always Walmart, although the Walmart near me in Auburn, Maine has very little St. Patrick’s Day stuff. I think I saw headbands but that was a week ago. The shelves are full of Easter stuff.

Bordallo Pinheiro Cabbage Green Dinner Plate, Set of 4 Amazon affiliate link https://amzn.to/3UW2Fhh
The Bordallo Pinheiro line of products are expensive, but I love them and was happy to buy my mother a few pieces at a time. They made my mother happy, which makes me happy. Read the reviews on Amazon’s site and browse all the dinnerware pieces made by this company. The beauty of these cabbage plates and dinnerware is that it can also be used for Easter table settings! However, I haven’t used these plates for meals that require cutting food with a knife. Thus, we sometimes set the table with them for looks but actually use sturdy paper plates (the big oval ones!).
The gold embellished glassware is still sold on sites like eBay and etsy as secondhand items. My mother got her sets as gifts from her
grandmother and she also inherited a set from her mother-in-law. Her sets include ice buckets, tongs, wine glasses, shot glasses, and
several other styles, with carrying trays!
One more thing! Bella is my tiger cat. I like to use SnapChat filters when taking her picture. It’s a lot easier than actually getting her to wear a leprechaun hat and orange beard! LOL.
